Billy, My dad, Glen, was a race fan from day one. He attended the the first Southern 500 and traveled the circuit far and near, from the '50's through the '70's. He was my introduction to stock car racing.......a 1962 GN event at Rambi Raceway won by Ned Jarrett.
Dad began racing at the local dirt tracks in 1964, a career that would last through the 1972 season. As you recall, in the early '70's paved tracks, were becoming the norm, and a backyard-built racer did not lend itself to pavement as well as it did dirt. He chose to bow out and pursue other business interests.
Along the way, dad earned his pilot's license, acquired his own airplane, and began flying to many Winston Cup events, including the very first Talladega 500...the one with the driver's boycott. Rockingham, from Shallotte, was about a 30-45 minute plane ride for us, and at The Rock, the drag-strip was used as the landing strip and it was very convenient........just land the plane and walk accross the street.
Flying home from Rockingam's 1976 "American 500" dad's plane developed engine problems. Dad, and another passenger, were both fatally injured in an attempted crash landing. I'd love for you two to meet and discuss the old days, too. I'd give just about anything for that to happen, but, sadly, it's not possible. But, I'm still thrilled to finally get to meet all of you guys that I first "met" during my dad's racing days.
Billy, what beach? I'm just above Myrtle Beach and the NC/SC state line in the little town of Shallotte, NC. My business is "Bobby's Auto Parts" stop by sometime if you can........we are real easy to find (4767 main st.) Lots of racers have come by over the years..........and how special it would be to have a member of the National Dirt Track Hall of Fame!!
Thanks for the note. I never really raced myself, had a street stock car that lasted me only about 5 weeks in 1976 and after I totaled it, I could never really afford another one. I've been a fan for years(since I was a little kid), and was very fortunate to have worked with DLM Hall of Fame Driver Tom Nesbitt from my home town of Thunder Bay On. for many years. I'm an amateur photograpeher, and shot picture for many years at my home track, Riverview Rcaeways in Thunder Bay, and around the surrounding area. I was the track announcer their for the last year or two that it was open along with a former driver Donny Young. I also was the announcer at the other dirt track that opened after Riverview, Mosquito Speedway, for 3 years, before moving to southern On. where I reside now. I go to Eldora twice a year and try and hit two or three other dirt tracks for big races every year. Maybe someday we will run into you at the track. Ken
